When the creature speaks this line, he believes the creature wants to kill him. He never bothers to consider the trend the creature has taken. Instead of taking Victor's life as revenge, the creature has been killing his family members. He never stops to think maybe Elizabeth could be in danger. Imstead, he focuses only on himself. He leaves Elizabeth alone in the house, and she ends up dead. Also, why did Victor never consider maybe an 8 foot tall super human could be dangerous? Instead of ending the life of the creature as soon as he made it, he just runs off and lets it escape. When he encounters the creature again, he tries to threaten it. The creature is several feet taller, probably hundreds of pounds heavier, obviously stronger, and possesses supior reflexes and skills. Victor stands no chance, and is lucky the monster doesn't tear him to pieces as soon as it layer eyes on him.
