This guy is a real pessimist. He has a job and he pays his bills, which is more than most Americans can ask for right now. He uses a toad as a metaphor for his job. A toad is not a very pleasant animal, and even goes as far as saying it seeps poison into his life. This man looks at the poor, whose "nippers have got bare feet" and almost seems to envy them! They do not have to work, and they don't starve or pay bills and are skinny. He wants everything for nothing. He says he wishes to live on his wits, just like lecturers and scoundrels. His "toad" squats on him and prevents him from getting the fame, girls and money he desires. I think this guy needs to read "Dream Deferred" and cheer up a bit.
